ResumoIn this study, the characterization of a fish community inhabiting a mangrove channel that connects to a coastal lagoon with the open ocean in Cayo Coco, province of Ciego de Avila, was carried out. Fish distribution along the mangrove channel was assessed and related to the abiotic parameters of the area and to habitat characteristics. Daily visual censuses with snorkel gear were conducted for counting fish species. Refuge and shadow area were measured. Temperature, salinity, depth, tides, tidal current, transparency and face of the moon were also measured. 47 fish species grouped in 22 families were observed. Abundance of small-sized fish at the beginning (nearer to the sea) of the channel was greater than at the end (nearer to the lagoon). Meanwhile large-sized fish were found at the end of the channel. A strong relationship among fish distribution, structural complexity and shadow of the channel was found, which reinforces the importance of the mangrove forests for these organisms.
