Resumo

Introduction. The aim of this work was to determine the intrauterine growth of a group of Mexican twins and compare it with published reference charts, and with nomograms for single-pregnancy newborns. Material and methods. Somatometry measures were obtained from a group of newborn twins (n =124, from 62 pregnancies), born in a third level hospital in a 6 years period. Data were analyzed with central a dispersion tests and percentiles were calculated. Results. Mean birth weight at birth was 1 902 ± 520 g, height 43.23 ± 3.51 cm, cephalic circumference 30.71 ± 2.4 cm, gestational age 37 ± 2.31 weeks, and maternal age 27 ± 6 years; 49.2% were female twins. Mean weight of twins was in the 10-25 percentile for normal single Mexican newborns, but 10, 50, and 90 coincided with published charts for newborn twins. Conclusions. The somatometric findings in our group of newborn twins were similar to those informed in the literature, although different to data for normal single newborns; therefore the use of special charts for twins should be used to evaluate intrauterine growth of twins.
