Resumo

This study was conducted to evaluate the ameliorative effect of Costus pictus D. Don. rhizome on mitochondrial enzymes in alcohol induced free radical toxicity male albino rats. Liver damage was induced in Wistar rats (150-200g) by administering alcohol (0.7ml/kg, orally) once daily for 7 days. CP (50mg/kg, orally) was given for 21 days. After 21 days treatment the selected enzymes such as Glucose–6–phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6PDH), Succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), Malate dehydrogenase (MDH), Glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) and Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activities were assayed in the liver tissue. The activities of SDH, G-6-PDH, MDH and GDH were decreased and LDH activity was increased in alcohol treated rats, but with Costus pictus rhizome treatment in alcohol treated rats these mitochondrial enzymes restored to normal levels. These results suggest that mitochondrial enzyme activities were increased with Costus pictus rhizome treatment. We conclude that Costus pictus rhizome treatment is beneficial to improve the mitochondrial enzymes activities during alcohol induced free radical stress.
