Resumo

The writer discusses Gillis van Coninxloo and the history of Flemish forest landscape painting. He focuses in particular on Martin Papenbrock's study Landschaften des Exils: Gillis van Coninxloo und die Frankenthaler Maler (2001), which focuses on the relationship between art and exile and views Coninxloo's forest paintings above all as metaphors of the artist's experience of exile. The writer dismisses the suggestion that Coninxloo created and understood his forest paintings as symbols of exile because there is as yet no solid evidence to back up such a claim.
