Screening previous to admission to psychiatric ward treatment or to treatment in community psychiatric service. In 1484 and 1985 a study of 245 referrals (of 194 patients) was performed in the Danish municipality of Ikast (approximately 20,000 inhabitants), where a community psychiatric service was established on 1 January 1984;the material comprised all but 11 referrals in 1984 and 1985. The 245 referred were either admitted to hospital or treated in the community psychiatric service. This process of screening the patients is influenced by at least three factors: 1) the capacity of the psychiatric service; 2) the staff screening the patients; and 3) the background and condition of the patients, of which factors the latter, in particular, is of interest in this study. To evaluate the influence of the condition and background of the patients on this process, the predictive value of selected variables was examined with regard to hospital admission. Of the 245 referred. 44% were admitted to hospital. A logistic regression analysis further revealed that patients who were male, were living alone, or were psychotic were significantly more likely to be admitted than other patients, whereas patients referred by a general practitioner or who had earlier been treated in the community psychiatric service and/or had previously been admitted to hospital were significantly less likely to be admitted. Variables such as age and whether the patient owned his place of residence had no influence on the screening process.
