ResumoIn order to obtain high-molecular-weight polymers from acetaldehyde azine (AcAz), anionic polymerization was investigated under various conditions. Polymerizations of AcAz initiated by methylmagnesium iodide yielded high-molecular-weight polymers, although the polymer yield was very low (≤4.0%), except for the polymerization in 1,4-dioxane. M w of the polymer obtained depended on the solvent used: M w decreased in the order tetrahydrofuran > toluene > diethyl ether > 1,4-dioxane > hexane. In the polymerization in 1,4-dioxane, a methanol-insoluble polymer was obtained in a relatively high yield (32.6%), indicative of considerable retardation of the chain-transfer reaction. Spectroscopic data indicated that the polymer obtained was composed of 1,4-trans units. In addition, poly(AcAz) was crystalline and fully decomposed below 280°C.
