The plays by Machado de Assis are shaped so that the expression essence is not only subordinated to the dramatic form, but critically dialogues with form itself, or vice versa. The formal features, then, either agree with the way the author intends to handle and build his story, or both form and content are simultaneously treated ironically or challenged by the characters.
