ResumoTHE Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) is consulting on a new draft Veterinary Medicines Guidance Note (VMGN6) regarding the issue of Animal Test Certificates (ATCs) to allow the conduct of clinical trials in animals, and comments have been invited by April 24, 2015 (https://consult.defra.gov.uk/vmd/review-of-approach-to-issuing-an-atc). As I see it, the draft proposal would effectively mean UK vets would not have access to developing medicines to treat their patients. If unchanged, it would mean that we would continue to operate differently from the principles applied by all other countries by not having a sole regulator for authorisation of veterinary clinical trials (eg, currently a potentially life-saving companion animal treatment has clinical trials permitted in two EU member states and the USA, but not the UK).
