Resumo

The cemetery of Holy ground, for its architecture and artwork, is an open air museum.Most of the monuments are adorned by pictures or inscriptions in Latin and Portuguese.To understand the existence of epigraphy in the context of the Holy Ground cemetery, situated in Salvador, Bahia, it is necessary to know the history of the cemetery and the subject is explanation of the entries.the city of Salvador was built in the Lusitanian colonial mold.The cemetery of Campo Santo is home to a considerable number of works of art and epigraphic records, which tell the socio-political and religious history.The foundation of the cemetery was in 1823; however it was not a peaceful thing.the population invaded and destroyed, playing down its walls and its own chapel.It was a protest demonstration organized by brotherhoods against the secularization of cemeteries and prohibition of burials in churches.The Holy Ground was restored and continued to bury their dead in accordance with Catholic doctrine.The Holy Ground cemetery has tomb, beautiful and luxurious mausoleums with epigraphic records, guarding the memory of Bahian society of the nineteenth century to the present day.
