Resumo

The stratigraphic analysis of the Oligocene section of the Campos Basin indicates a genetic relationship between the existence of a large volume of a shallow-marine siliciclastic sediments, previously stored in a pre-Oligocene subsiding area (Sao Tome Low), and the development of a distinct turbidite complex during the Oligocene. The Oligocene turbidite complex of Campos Basin consists of three main turbidite systems. They are genetically related to type I sequence boundaries, which formed in response to global variations of the sea level during a period of relative regional tectonic stability. Each turbidite system is composed mainly of massive, well-sorted fine-grained sandstones, which are interpreted to have been reworked and winnowed by bottom currents before final deposition. In Oligocene turbidite reservoirs, PETROBRAS has discovered two giant oil fields (Marlim and Albacora) during the last 5 years with an oil-in-place volume in excess of 18 billion barrels.
