ResumoPareiorhina carrancas, new species, is described from a headwater stream of the rio Grande basin, Alto Parana, in the State of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. It is distinguishable from P. rudolphi, the type and only other species of Pareiorhina, by the combination of several characters, such as: anterior profile of head elliptical, ventral border of rostral region and dorsal border of upper lip covered with odontodes, presence of a low elongate ridge on postdorsal surface of trunk, inferior surfaces of first pectoral, pelvic, and anal-fin ray covered by conspicuously pointed odontodes. The external morphology of P. carrancas was compared to that of putatively allied taxa. Pareiorhina carrancas was found in a pristine stretch of a third order headwater stream, with dense vegetal coverage. The probable original illustrations of the holotype of Hypostomus (Rhinelepis) microps Ihering (=Pareiorhina rudolphi) are published for the first time.
