Resumo

Andersen (1975, p. 40), in his revision of the genus Limnogonus, gave the original date of publication of Montrousier's Gerris luctuosa as 1865, and repeated the error in Andersen and Weir (1997), citing only the journal article, which may indeed have been published in 1865. Andersen overlooked an earlier description in Perroud (1864), a copy of which resides in the senior author's library. double publication of Montrousier's new species descriptions from Kanala (=New Caledonia) was pointed out previously by Polhemus and Lansbury (1997, p. 7). In his Short Zoology of Curtiss presents little book as a sort of fore-runner of my greater zoology; thus, it covers only a part of the animals of Tahiti. However, he presents a description of each species that is included. He says The binomial name I give after each species I describe, is the earliest I could find, or else a new one (if I could not find it named before); but the literature on the zoology of is so scanty that I may have made mistakes at times. Curtiss consistently uses binomial nomenclature and gives a clear description and type lo cality for each of his species, but makes no effort to designate type specimens. new species proposed in this book meet the criteria of Article 13 of the 1999 Inter national Code of Zoological Nomenclature, and are thus clearly available names. species Curtiss described as Cimex barffi is given the vernacular name Tahiti water-skater and described in sufficient detail to leave no doubt that it is a synonym of Limnogonus luctuosus; this is the only freshwater gerrid on Tahiti, mainly occur ring on ponds at low elevations (for example, we have made recent collections of
