In the following pages I propose to suggest, rather than to demonstrate, the relevance of the philosophical perspective of Benedictus de Spinoza to a view of the current state and future progress of physical theory. To what extent these suggestions can be made more concrete or more firmly grounded is a task which cannot be fruitfully explored in a short exposition, but perhaps the desirability of further thought and exploration concerning these matters can be indicated.
