ResumoKaren Brooks believes young people have become part of what she terms 'resistance conformity'. That is, they believe they are fashioning for themselves a unique identity carved in their own self-image when in reality they are donning a prefabricated corporate and cultural mould. Brooks stresses the need for parents, educators and caregivers to educate young people to be discerning in their pop culture consumption, and for adults to educate themselves about what young people are consuming. If cultural pedagogy is used to empower young people to 'read' images of themselves, and to provide them with tools to decrypt these images, young people will be able to be more discriminatory and discerning about what they view and how they view it.
