Effective social education of exclusion: contributions from social pedagogy

ResumoAbstractThe objective of this research was to identify effective strategies for socio-educational intervention with adolescents aged 12–16 years in a situation of social risk and provide some proposals from the field of social pedagogy. The research was conducted in three autonomous regions of Spain—Madrid, Galicia and Catalonia—between 2011 and 2013 and used the grounded theory approach. Thirty one practitioners and 19 adolescents participated in the focus groups and interviews. The main results suggest central strategies related to the empowerment and participation of adolescents, resilience and the flexible planning of interventions, with relevant implications for practice and policies.El objetivo de esta investigación fue identificar estrategias eficaces para la intervención socioeducativa con adolescentes de 12 a 16 años en situación de riesgo social y ofrecer algunas propuestas desde el campo de la Pedagogía Social. La investigación se realizó en tres comunidades autónomas de España—Madrid, Galicia y Cataluña—entre 2011 y 2013 y se utilizó el enfoque de la teoría fundamentada. En los grupos de discusión y las entrevistas participaron 31 profesionales y 19 adolescentes. He is director of the Master's degree on Educational Intervention in Social Contexts and director of the Institute of Research and Training for Social Sustainability. He has been visiting professor at the Université de Liège (Belgium), Universitè de Quebec à Montréal (Canada), Universidad de Comahue (Argentina) and Universidad de Sonora (Mexico). His main research lines are about Social Pedagogy, Complex Thought and Adolescence and Youth in social difficulties.Carme Montserrat is PhD in Psychology and tenured Assistant Professor at the University of Girona (Spain) and is currently the Vice-dean of the Faculty of Education and Phycology. After many years working in education, social services and in child protection as a practitioner, in 2003 she joined the Research Institute on Quality of Life (IRQV) and its Research team on Childhood, Adolescence, Children's rights and their Quality of Life as a researcher. She has participated in different studies about children in public care and vulnerable young people as well as children and adolescents' subjective wellbeing and children's rights.Ana Iglesias is PhD in Psychopedagogy. She started her academic career in the Faculty of Education at the University of A Coruña in 1997, where she remains. She lectures mainly on the Social Education Degree and is currently the Dean of the Faculty. The topics she addresses in her teaching and research activity are tightly linked to her previous professional experience as an educator in two juvenile justice centres: topics on the effects of academic failure on the youths' identities—especially among the most vulnerable ones—the connection between juvenile justice and social inequality and the relationships between gender, equality and education.Laura Cruz is PhD in Pedagogy. She lectures at the Faculty of Education at the University of A Coruña (Spain) since 2010. She is coordinator of the Social Education Programme where she teaches courses related to at-risk communities and the topics she addresses in her research activity are those related to socio-educational intervention with vulnerable children.
