ResumoA Universidade Catolica de Pernambuco originou-se de uma conjugacao de esforcos empreendida na adesao a uma acao da Igreja Catolica que, sobretudo nas decadas de 1940 e 1950, incentivava a criacao de Faculdades e Universidades Catolicas, devidamente sintonizadas com as perspectivas eclesiais para aquelas instituicoes. A acao foi concretamente assumida, no caso estudado, pelos membros da Companhia de Jesus e por seus colaboradores. A trajetoria da UNICAP teve inicio com a Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciencias e Letras Manoel da Nobrega, em 18 de abril de 1943, e sua formalizacao como universidade se deu em 27 de setembro de 1951, a partir da agregacao de unidades preexistentes. Uma tao modesta origem, nao impediu seu crescimento. Este artigo objetiva reconstituir aspectos primordiais da caminhada encetada e, nela, destacar pontos que marcaram a sua evolucao e os compromissos que vem assumindo com as sociedades recifense, pernambucana e nordestina, tendo como vies de analise a sua atuacao enquanto Instituicao de Ensino Superior e a importância que foi conquistando. Para escreve-lo, o autor fez revisao da literatura e pesquisa nos arquivos da propria UNICAP, da Vice-provincia do Brasil Setentrional da Companhia de Jesus, e no Arquivo Pubico Estadual. A analise empreendida permite afirmar que a Universidade Catolica de Pernambuco nao nasceu de um decreto governamental: ela e fruto de um projeto educativo da Igreja e da Companhia de Jesus que entusiasmou os que a sonharam outrora, conduziram-na durante sete decadas e a compoem atualmente. Abstract The Catholic University of Pernambuco originated from a combination of efforts undertaken in the adherence to an action of the Catholic Church which, principally in the 1940ies and 1950ies, stimulated the creation of Catholic colleges and universities, which were duly tuned to the ecclesiastic expectations towards that kind of institution. The action was, in the case analyzed, specifically adopted by the members of the Company of Jesus and its collaborators. The development of the UNICAP began with the College of Philosophy, Sciences and Arts Manoel da Nobrega, on April 18 th , 1943, and its formalization as a University took place on September 27 th , 1951, through the concentration of pre-existent units. This modest origin did not prevent its growth. This article pretends to reconstruct key aspects of the way that was begun that day and, in it, point out aspects which marked its evolution and the commitments it assumed with the societies of Recife, Pernambuco and the Northeast, the bias of the analysis being its acting as Institution of Superior Education and the importance it managed to conquer. To write it, the author reviewed the literature and research in the archives of the UNICAP itself, the Vice-province of Northern Brazil of the Company of Jesus and the State Public Archive. The analysis undertaken allows to affirm that the Catholic University of Pernambuco was not born from a governmental order, but is fruit of an educational project of the Church and the Company of Jesus, who enthused those who dreamed about it before, conducted it during seven decades and compose it today.
