ARQUEOLOGIA DE UMA FORTIFICAÇÃO: O Forte Orange E A Fortaleza de Santa Cruz em Itamaracá, Pernambuco

Este artigo refere-se a uma pesquisa realizada durante o curso de Mestrado do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Arqueologia, da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, no ano de 2007 e enfocou o período colonial no Brasil em dois momentos próximos e distintos e dois sistemas construtivos representativos da engenharia militar do século XVII empregados no mesmo espaço. O primitivo forte Orange, construído em 1631 pela Companhia das Índias Ocidentais durante o período de ocupação de vinte e quatro anos, fazia parte do sistema de defesa elaborado para as capitanias de Pernambuco e de Itamaracá. A fortificação trocou depois o nome para Fortaleza de Santa Cruz, mas até hoje prevalece o nome primitivo, Forte Orange. Foi analisada neste trabalho a mudança do sistema construtivo e da disposição dos edifícios dentro do perímetro delimitado pelas muralhas, tomando-se como base relatos históricos e os resultados encontrados em duas campanhas arqueológicas. ABSTRACTThis articlee refers to a survey conducted during the Master’s course at the Postgraduate Program in Archaeology at the Federal University of Pernambuco and focused on the colonial period in Brazil in the near two and different times and two representative building systems of military engineering of the seventeenth century, employed in the same space. The primitive Orange fort, built in 1631 by the Western India Company during the occupation period of twenty-four years, was part of the defense system designed to the captaincy of Pernambuco and Itamaracá. The fortification after changed its name to Fortress of Santa Cruz, but so far prevails the original name, Orange Fort. It was analyzed in this work the changing of the building system and the layout of the buildings within the perimeter bounded by the walls, taking as base historical accounts and the results found in two archaeological campaigns.Key Words Fortifications; defense systems; historical arqueology.
