ResumoSolid state 31P n.m.r. was applied to elucidate the structure and dynamics of DNA in the solid state. In the analyses of the line shapes of 31P n.m.r. spectra and the relaxation parameters, it was demonstrated that A-DNA has a single backbone conformation but that B-DNA is considerably heterogeneous in its backbone probably depending on base sequences, and furthermore that the motion of DNA in hydrated fibers can be descrived in terms of rapid internal motion and rotational and wobbling motions.
