Resumo

The irrigation management of the Curu-Pentecoste irrigation project (as in other irrigated areas of the Brazilian Northeast) is usually unaware of the actual water demands of the crops in the area, as well as unaware of possible impacts (on these needs) of climate changes. This study was aimed at quantifying the impact of the temperature rise predicted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change - IPCC, on the water demands of the irrigated cowpea crop in the Curu – Pentecoste irrigated area. The "software" "ISAREG." was used to determine the NAC (water demands of the crop). With this software, it was calculated the reference evapotranspiration (ETo) and crop evapotranspiration (ETc), and the soil water balance was performed. Weather data of the Curu – Pentecoste area was used in determining the ETc, taking into account the temperature increase for the next decades (according to IPCC predictions) and the cowpea crop coefficients (Kc), obtained through local experiments: Kcini = 0 78; Kcmid = 1.02; Kcfinal = 0.69. This research showed that, with the predicted temperature rise, the water needs of the cowpea culture should be, on average, from 7.5% to 12.8% higher for the edaphoclimatic conditions of the Curu-Pentecoste area.
