Abstract The main objective of this paper is to analyses the military relationship with research and teaching at Centro Brasileiro de Pesquisas Fisicas (CBPF), which had its beginnings during the 1950s. We perceived the circulation of ideas, projects and scientific instruments between research institutions of Army and the CBPF as a trying to establish an alignment between the military and scientific structures in Brazil. This tentative has happened during the time of work at CBPF of General Argus Ourique Moreira and of Colonel Jose Antonio Duffles Amarante, simultaneously with their liaisons with military institutions that were developing scientific projects. Furthermore, by analyzing the institutional circulation of the men in uniform quoted above, it is possible to compare the characteristics of teaching and research in civil and military places. The set of elements that we analyzed lead us to the conclusion that the military presence in research projects in CBPF is justified by a role much more of execution and of a support to investigations done by CBPF’s physicists than a creative or inventive participation of the militaries. Keywords: CBPF, Brazilian Army, general Argus, coronel Duffles, particle accelerator, circulation of knowledge.
