Astyanax biotae, a new species of characid, is described from a first-order stream in the Rio Paranapanema basin, upper Rio Parana system, in the interior of the state of Parana, southeastern Brazil. The species differs from its congeners in that region in a combination of morphometric and pigmentary features.
