The age at initial surgery ranged from 3 weeks to 5 years. Twenty-five patients had a low and 3 had a high takeoff of the vagina from the urogenital sinus. Of these children 22 (78.5%) required further vaginal reconstructive procedures to achieve a normal vaginal outlet. Of the 22 patients requiring further repair 18 have undergone vaginal reconstructive procedures with an initial success rate of 72.2%. These long-term data suggest that if vaginal reconstructive surgery is performed in infancy details, such as placement of the perineal flap well into the vagina and careful followup of the vaginal outlet, are mandatory for success. If there is evidence of outlet narrowing, periodic dilation will be needed to prevent vaginal stenosis and further vaginal surgery. © 1992 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited ByLesma A, Bocciardi A, Corti S, Chiumello G, Rigatti P and Montorsi F (2018) Sexual Function in Adult Life Following Passerini-Glazel Feminizing Genitoplasty in Patients with Congenital Adrenal HyperplasiaJournal of Urology, VOL. 191, NO. 1, (206-211), Online publication date: 1-Jan-2014.Moriya K, Higashiyama H, Tanaka H, Mitsui T, Nakamura M and Nonomura K (2009) Long-Term Outcome of Vaginoplasty With the Bilateral Labioscrotal FlapJournal of Urology, VOL. 182, NO. 4S, (1876-1881), Online publication date: 1-Oct-2009.Thomas J and Adams M (2018) Female Sexual Function and Pregnancy After Genitourinary ReconstructionJournal of Urology, VOL. 182, NO. 6, (2578-2584), Online publication date: 1-Dec-2009.Hoepffner W, Rothe K and Bennek J (2018) Feminizing Reconstructive Surgery for Ambiguous Genitalia: The Leipzig ExperienceJournal of Urology, VOL. 175, NO. 3, (981-984), Online publication date: 1-Mar-2006.BOCCIARDI A, LESMA A, MONTORSI F and RIGATTI P (2018) PASSERINI-GLAZEL FEMINIZING GENITOPLASTY: A LONG-TERM FOLLOWUP STUDYJournal of Urology, VOL. 174, NO. 1, (284-288), Online publication date: 1-Jul-2005.WISNIEWSKI A, MIGEON C, MALOUF M and GEARHART J (2018) PSYCHOSEXUAL OUTCOME IN WOMEN AFFECTED BY CONGENITAL ADRENAL HYPERPLASIA DUE TO 21-HYDROXYLASE DEFICIENCYJournal of Urology, VOL. 171, NO. 6 Part 1, (2497-2501), Online publication date: 1-Jun-2004.ALIZAI N, THOMAS D, LILFORD R, BATCHELOR A and JOHNSON N (2018) FEMINIZING GENITOPLASTY FOR CONGENITAL ADRENAL HYPERPLASIA: WHAT HAPPENS AT PUBERTY?Journal of Urology, VOL. 161, NO. 5, (1588-1591), Online publication date: 1-May-1999.LASHLEY D, THOMAS R, SILBERBERG P and SKOOG S (2018) MANAGEMENT OF AN INFECTED HEMATOMETROCOLPOS IN A PATIENT WITH CONGENITAL ADRENAL HYPERPLASIA AND VAGINAL STENOSISJournal of Urology, VOL. 160, NO. 2, (508-509), Online publication date: 1-Aug-1998.
