Resumo

Part of a monograph on Titian's work. Titian's so-called Amor Sacro e Profano in Rome's Museo Galleria Borghese does not represent the Platonic concepts of sacred and profane love. The central theme of the painting, a wedding picture for the daughter of a Paduan law professor, Laura Bagarotto, is the support of Venus. The goddess of love is shown with an idealized young wife (perhaps a portrait) beside a well. The painting follows an epithalamic logic and praises sensual, ecstasy-serving beauty.
