Resumo

This paper presents for the first time a detailed morphological description of the Dhara hominid dental specimens. Up until now, there has been very little discussion of the Dhara hominid specimens or the Dhara Forest Reserve fossil localities. This would appear to be because the discussions to date have been published in journals which are not readily available outside of India (see Sahni & Tiwari, 1979; Sahni et al., 1974, 1980, 1983). These specimens are, however, significant as they are associated with a vertebrate assemblage which indicates an uppermost Chinji age, though some of the vertebrates can also be allocated to the Nagri. It has been suggested that the fauna from these localities may prove to be transitional between the Chinji and Nagri (Sahni et al., 1980; Gaur & Vasishat, 1989). This suggests that these specimens are around 11 Ma old (see Bernor, 1983; Johnson et al., 1985; Retallack, 1991). Thus these hominids are probably 3 Ma older than the hominids from the other fossil hominid localities around Hari-Talyangar, which are about 250 km northwest of Dhara. They are apparently earlier than the hominids from Jammu, Kashmir State, currently placed
