in Mozambique needs to assert itself as an essential tool and intervener in society. It is urgent to expand the number of viewers interested in the art, open new horizons in relation to new forms of artistic practice and extend this effort beyond the capital city Manifesto MUVART – 2003.Conceptual boundary crossings inscribed within the tenets of MUVART construct palpable realities in the cultural landscape of Mozambique. Ironically, MUVART (Contemporary Art Movement of Mozambique), creates a broad foundation for the intellectual development and advancement of contemporary art in Mozambique, yet occupies no permanent physical spaces of its own. Despite its intangibility, MUVART’s potent theoretical presence has profoundly shifted the paradigm of art making and its discourse within Mozambique. Using MUVART as a point of departure, this paper explores significant tangible, temporal and conceptual spaces of contemporary art in Mozambique. An examination of more recent developments of contemporary artistic platforms in addition to historical arts organizations facilitates viewing varied artistic networks through their individual organizational, curatorial and exhibition strategies in Maputo, Mozambique’s capital city. Visual arts spaces included within this investigation include MUVART, Associacao Nucleo de Arte, Associacao Kulungwana and the TDM Bienal.
