The popularity has been reflected in the large number of biochar related publications, for example, more than 200 papers were published by Chinese scientists in peer reviewed journals in 2014, alone, and numerous new commercial entities focusing on biochar production and products development were established. Research areas cover feedstock selection, pyrolysis technology development, biochar characterization, and agronomic benefits and environmental effects of biochar application. This chapter provides an overview of the activities in biochar research and application in China in the past few years. Further research directions are identified to ensure a beneficial and sustainable application of biochar to agricultural land.
