ResumoA study of Hans Baldung Grien's 1515 drawing Nackte junge Hexe, einen fischgestaltigen Drachen neckend (Young naked witch bantering with a fishlike dragon) in the Staatliche Kunsthalle in Karlsruhe, Germany. The writer reviews art historical research from the last half-century, which has unsuccessfully sought a plausible interpretation of this early pornographic representation. He suggests that since it will probably never be possible to clarify whether the artist had a nameless Nereid or—more concretely—a Scylla or Venus in mind, he did not intend to represent a witch with this naked beauty. He examines the cultural milieu to which the artist's “strange fantasies” on paper belonged.
