ResumoTaxonomic characterizations were made of the Myrtaceae species popularly known as “pedra-ume-caa” in the Brazilian Amazon, with emphasis on those species recognized and commercialized in the city of Belem. Samples were obtained mainly from commercial sources, as well as from collectors and distributors of the product. Species identification was made by comparison with material from the IAN and MG herbaria, and with reference to specialized literature. Seven species have been recognized as “pedra-ume-caa”: Eugenia punicifolia (Kunth) DC., Myrcia amazonica DC., M. citrifolia (Aubl.) Urb., M. guianensis (Aubl.) DC., M. multiflora (Lam.) DC., M. salicifolia DC. and M. speciosa (Amshoff) McVaugh. In the city of Belem three species are sold under this common name: Eugenia biflora (L.) DC., Myrcia multiflora (Lam.) DC . and Myrcia sylvatica (G.Mey.) DC. In this paper, E. biflora and M. sylvatica are registered for the first time with this common name. A key to species of “pedra-uma-caa” is given, as well as information on geographical distributions, habitats and phenology Key words: Eugenia biflora ; Myrcia multiflora ; Myrcia sylvatica ; taxonomy; Amazon.
