Resumo

This document is in the archives of the Department of Antiquities of the Ashmolean Museum in a box-file entitled ‘Unsorted Correspondence, John and Arthur Evans’. The ‘'autobiographical sketch’ is discussed in Fortnum's correspondence with Arthur Evans. On 15 July 1889, Evans wrote to Fortnum agreeing that the published notices of his gift to Oxford and honorary doctorate were inadequate. He was interested by Fortnum's autobiographical sketch but unsure of whether or where it could be published. 1 Fortnum urged Evans to use his influence with Humphry Ward to get a piece based on it included in The Times; however, nothing seems to have come of this. The Watford Observer published a short biography of Fortnum based on this text, with a photograph of him, on 18 June 1892. 2
