Resumo

Based on the work of Giorgio Agamben, this study promotes a reflection about the issue of secularization in contemporary society, emphasizing the presence of deism (associated to plurality) in its opposition to theism (associated to unity), considering the thesis that within the Western contemporary State lies the powerful residue of theism, a foundation for the permanent state of exception. This study also explores the thesis that by virtue of Christian theology, the contemporary government machine is the expression of an economic theology (or oikonomia), given its functional organization nature and its inclination towards management. In conclusion, this study discusses Agamben’s thesis that contemporary politics is referenced in two contradictory paradigms: political theology, which has transcendent characteristics, and economic theology, which has immanence characteristics.
