Resumo

Within the application of the concept of the sacramental nature of the Church, the Second Vatican Council defines it as sacramentum unitatis , quoting Cyprian of Carthage expressly as a precise source for the use of this formula. In this present study this expression is analysed as it appears in the writings of the Bishop of Carthage, as is the way he uses it to refer to Church unity. Our analysis shows how the definitive characteristics of the unity of the Church are manifested in this terminology, thus emphasising the reference to the sacred and invulnerable character of this unity, that is to say, to its divine origin, in that it is established by God, revelated in Scripture, and therefore essential for the faithful.
