ResumoThe management problem addressed in this work is to formulate a model to determine optimal costs for water supply given surface and/ or underground sources of water supply by the Anambra State Water Corporation Awka. The model shall take into account annual operation and maintenance costs to enable the water agency to stay in business as it faces the challenges of competing water vendors. In Anambra State, water supply to the citizenry is not encouraging. There is need to identify a functional approach to meet the water demands of the populace, particularly, in Awka, presently witnessing continual growth from migration by rural dwellers in search of jobs and other necessities of life. The costs for the annual operation and maintenance (O and M) for a typical water treatment scheme for varying average inflows of raw water were formulated. For the modelling analyses, the ratios of 10, 30, 15, 20 and 25%; 15, 35, 10, 15 and 25%; 10, 40, 10, 10 and 30% were apportioned for the unit treatment processes of sedimentation, coagulation and flocculation, filtration, metals removal and disinfection, respectively and were used to derive annual O and M cost models for the treatment processes for the typical water supply scheme. The critical model case was adopted to ensure sustainable management of the proposed Awka Water Scheme. The adopted model after sensitivity analysis when compared with accruable annual revenue shows that the scheme is viable. The study resulted in the formulation of an optimal cost model for assessment and prediction of operation and maintenance costs for sustainable management of water supply schemes which shall be of interest to scholars and readers.
