ResumoAbdulaziz Y. Lodhi, a language student at Uppsala University, has written a brief yet coherent study of the institution of slavery on the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba, with special emphasis on the words found in Swahili pertaining to the many facets of slavery. As the author states, the main purpose of this short work was simply to assemble information on slavery and slaves in a single short document, excluding as far as possible the topic of Slave Trade . One must conclude that on the surface Lodhi accomplishes his task by bringing together a large number of interesting facts about slavery and the language of human bondage. Seriously researched, and drawn from a number of pub? lished works, personal observations, and pertinent oral sources, this booklet is perhaps too short. It whets the appetite for something more detailed and more substantive.
