ResumoAustralian content regulation of broadcasting began in 1942 with the introduction of a 2.5% Australian composition quota for radio. In the absence of detailed histories of broadcasting regulation, of commercial radio or of the record industry in Australia, we know little about the context in which the quota was introduced or the consequences of its implementation. After examining the development of an interdependent relationship between radio and the record industry in the 1930s, the paper describes the origins of the quota, its early implementation and the debates that it provoked.
