ResumoCennino Cennini's Libro dell'Arte, the first post–Middle Ages handbook devoted to the theory and practice of painting, is discussed. The work, which was written in the 1390s, contains 188 chapters on the various techniques of drawing and painting, ranging from the preparation of brushes to the mixing of colors to the making of binding materials. Cennini's theoretical program is a compilation of medieval, mainly theological, teachings and the art program of early Humanism. The tract is significant because it was the first to describe a painting technique designed to produce an illusionistic imitation of nature. The writer focuses in particular on Cennini's metaphorical description of painting as “incarnazione” (incarnation).
