Resumo

As much as the notorious figures he counted among his friends, French artist Alphonse Legros should be considered an actor of masculine poetics on London’s streets. The translocal space Legros created for himself in the Victorian art world as a French traditionalist functioned in tandem with the masculine roles he chose to adopt – including dandy, artistic genius, and outsider. While Legros’ performances were more nuanced than those of his more outlandish colleagues, he was equally active in the evolution of his own artistic identity in the 1860s, as explored in this article.
