Resumo

Since 2008, Nigeria's Election Management Body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has been engaged in fashioning out a means of resolving electoral disputes by Alternative Dispute Resolution. In the four years since 2008, INEC reports holding sensitization workshops across the country. Indications are that International Donor agencies have also shown interest in assisting the EMB. However, the political parties and Nigeria's politicians may eventually be the stumbling block. While the attitude of the generality of the membership of the Bar in Nigeria to ADR has continued to show significant preferrence for adversarial dispute resolution, the chances of advancing the adoption of ADR in political and election-related disputes in Nigeriia has shown significant signs of success. In this paper, I explore the gains of INEC in enlightening all election stakeholders; identify the shortcomings in the Commission's choice of strategy and suggest suitable alternatives.
