This study discusses the interactions between alloctonous continental sources and autochthonous geochemical processes occurring at the continental shelf in controlling heavy metals concentrations in sediments. The magnitude of the continental sources results in variations in heavy metal concentrations, which are large enough to make monitoring of local sources (offshore oil and gas exploration) very difficult. Therefore, new paradigm shall be established in monitoring strategies to account for these sources of heavy metal concentrations variability in continental shelf sediments. RESUMO Este estudo discute as interacoes entre fontes aloctones continentais e processos geoquimicos autoctones ocorrentes na plataforma continental, no controle das concentracoes finais de metais pesados em sedimentos. A magnitude das fontes continentais resulta em variacoes na concentracao de metais grandes o suficiente para tornar muito dificil o monitoramento de fontes locais (e.g. exploracao offshore de petroleo e gas). Portanto, a estrategia de monitoramento destas atividades deve estabelecer novos paradigmas que levem em consideracao estas fontes de variabilidade das concentracoes de metais pesados em sedimentos da plataforma continental.
