ResumoMortality and hatching of second stage-juveniles (J2) of Meloidogyne exigua of coffee were evaluated in essential oils of Eucalyptus camaldulensis, E. saligma, E. urophylla, Bixa orellana, Cymbopogon nardus, Xylopia brasiliensis and Melia azedarach. The plant oils were extracted by water steam dragging by utilizing the Clevenger modified apparatus or by immersion in solvents of Melia azedarach fruit parts. Residues were solubilized in dimethil sulphoxide. J2 mortality was evaluated 24 hours after immersion in oil. Greater mortality (P≤0,05) occurred equally in oils of Eucalyptus camaldulensis, E. saligma, E. urophylla, Bixa orellana, Xylopia brasiliensis and Melia azedarach fruit husk and flesh, than in water. Hatching of M. exigua J2 in essential oils was evaluated after 14 days of egg incubation at 25 °C in the dark. Oils did not inhibit J2 hatching more than to water, perhaps due to the volatilization of substances toxic to nematode embryos during the egg incubation period. Reduction of egg incubation period may avoid this problem. The high J2 mortality in most essential oils tested indicated presence of potential nematicidal bioactive substances in tested plants.
