Resumo

This article analyzes the situation that comes from the 2014 presidential election campaign in Brazil until the first months of Dilma Rousseff second term, from the interdisciplinary perspective of “media and politics.” After a reconstruction of the relationship between media and politics during the two Lula Administrations and Rousseff’s first term, the article suggests that during the presidential campaign of 2014, the mainstream news media initially tried to present Marina Silva as a “breakthrough candidate,” but when they realized that she could not win, they supported the candidate Aécio Neves, while they tried to involve Dilma Rousseff in corruption scandals. Finally, the study considers the political scene in Rousseff’s second term, where the candidate of the PT coalition, although electorally successful, is currently under restrictions on her political actions due, among other factors, by the lack of media regulation.
