ResumoA new Cryptobatrachus Ruthven, 1916 (Anura: Cryptobatrachidae) from the Venezuelan versant of the Sierra de Perija Abstract. A new marsupial frog of the genus Cryptobatrachus (Anura: Cryptobatrachidae) from the venezuelan versant of Sierra de Perija, is described. This new taxon is the first Cryptobatrachus from Venezuela. The new species can be distinguished from the other two previously known by the following combination of characters: size moderately large; head as wide as long, or slightly wider than long; tympanum 1/3 to near 1/2 to the eye diameter in females, and 1/2 to 3/4 in males; 10-13 vomerine tooth; distal subarticular tubercles on fingers III-IV very large, protuberant and with pads (considered synapomorphy of the genus); hands and foot without supernumerary tubercles; foot extensively webbed; females carrying 16-45 eggs on the back; dorsal coloration ground greenish with reddish tonalities, and a brown interorbital band; venter yellow greenish; iris pale golden; horizontally crossed by a red band wider than pupil, and a red triangle on the inferior portion. Cryptobatrachus nicefori Cochran et Goin, 1970, is not considered a Cryptobatrachus and remain as Hyla (incertae sedis) nicefori.
