N o w a d a y s , t h e m a l i g n a n t c a r c i n o m a i s d i a g n o s e d i n 1 1 m i l l i o n s p a t i e n t s p e r y e a r a n d i t a c c o u n t s f o r a r o u n d 7 m i l l i o n s o f d e a t h s d u e t o c a n c e r . M o r e o v e r , i t i s e s t i m a t e d t h a t d u r i n g t h e n e x t t h r e e d e c a d e s a p p r o x i m a t e l y 1 1 m i l l i o n p e o p l e w i l l b e d i a g n o s e d w i t h c a n c e r [ 1 ] . I n P o l a n d , c a n c e r i s t h e r e c o g n i z e d c a u s e o f 2 0 % d e a t h s . I n 2 0 0 6 , 9 1 6 3 2 d e a t h s f r o m c a r c i n o m a s w e r e d e n o t e d [ 2 ] a n d t h e m o s t c o m m o n o n e s i n c l u d e d : l u n g , c o l o n , b r e a s t a n d p r o s t a t e c a n c e r . A c c o r d i n g t o t h e W o r l d H e a l t h O r g a n i z a t i o n ( W H O ) , p a l l i a t i v e c a r e i s t h e i n t e r d i s c i p l i n a r y s p e c i a l t y t h a t a i m s t o r e l i e v e s u f f e r i n g a n d i m p r o v e t h e q u a l i t y o f c a r e f o r p a t i e n t s w i t h s e r i o u s i l l n e s s a n d t h e i r f a m i l i e s [ 3 ] . I t i s d e f i n e d a s a c t i v e , t o t a l c a r e i n t e g r a t i n g s y m p t o m a n d p a i n c o n t r o l w i t h s p i r i t u a l , p s y c h o l o g i c a l , s o c i a l a n d f i n a n c i a l f a c t o r s . T h e q u a l i t y o f l i f e ( Q L ) i s a m u l t i d i m e n s i o n a l c o n c e p t t h a t f o c u s e s o n h o w d i s e a s e a n d i t s t r e a t m e n t a f f e c t t h e i n d i v i d u a l [ 6 ] . I t i s a m u l t i d i s c i p l i n a r y s t r u c t u r e c o n s t i t u t e d b y a n u m b e r o f f a c t o r s i n c l u d i n g p h y s i c a l o n e s ( i . e . i n d u c e d f r o m t h e i l l n e s s a n d i t s t r e a t m e n t ) , p s y c h o l o g i c a l a n d e m o t i o n a l f a c t o r s r e l a t i n g t o a m o n g o t h e r s t a t e s o f a n x i e t y a n d d e p r e s s i o n a n d s o c i a l f a c t o r s , f i n a l l y . T h e q u a l i t y o f l i f e o f p a l l i a t i v e p a t i e n t s i s u s e d t o m e a s u r e t h e e f f e c t i v e n e s s o f t r e a t m e n t , a s w e l l a s t o s h o w t h e m o s t i m p o r t a n t a i m s i n t h e p a t i e n t ’ s c a r e . I t i s e x p e c t e d t h a t i m p r o v e d s u p p o r t i v e c a r e m e a s u r e s w i l l a l l o w p a t i e n t s t o b e n e f i t f r o m p a l l i a t i v e c a r e w i t h r e d u c e d s y m p t o m s a n d b e t t e r Q L . T h e Q L Q C 1 5 P A L i s r e c o m m e n d e d f o r u s e i n p a t i e n t s w i t h a d v a n c e d , i n c u r a b l e , a n d s y m p t o m a t i c c a n c e r w i t h a m e d i a n l i f e e x p e c t a n c y o f a f e w m o n t h s [ 8 9 ] . I n c o n t r a s t t o t h e n u m e r o u s Q L s t u d i e s u s i n g Q L Q C 3 0 f o r m [ 1 0 ] , t h e a s s e s s m e n t o f Q L u s i n g Q L Q C 1 5 P A L i s r e l a t i v e l y l a c k i n g . T o o u r k n o w l e d g e t h e r e i s n o s t u d y c o m p a r i n g t h e Q L o f t e r m i n a l l y i l l p a t i e n t s w i t h d i f f e r e n t t u m o r t y p e s , a s w e l l .
