Resumo

This chapter focuses on thermosensory mechanisms in the spinal cord of monkeys. The D.H. cold neurons are prime candidates for the thermosensory pathway from the skin to the higher levels of the central nervous system in primates. They offer a mechanism for the onward transmission of information from the specific cutaneous thermoreceptors, even though they appear to lack the precision that might have been expected from the properties of the cutaneous thermoreceptors. They have the capacity to send on information that is not contaminated by an input from sensitive mechanoreceptors. The result, which establishes that the D.H. cold neurons are not excited by light mechanical stimulation of the skin, is further evidence for the central role of the specific thermoreceptors in temperature sensation.
