ResumoDuring development of the immunoglobulin-producing system of cells in chickens, there is a sequential onset of immunoglobulin synthesis; IgM is followed by IgG. Perhaps the most incisive experimental dissection of this stepwise pattern is seen in experiments employing embryonic bursectomy [1, 2]. Removal of the bursa 4 days before hatching often produces total agammaglobulinemia. Embryonic bursectomy 2 days before hatching consistently prevents significant synthesis of IgG but does not depress subsequent IgM synthesis. Bursectomy after hatching does not compromise IgM synthesis and usually results in a transient delay in onset of IgG synthesis [3]. A similar sequential onset of immunoglobulin synthesis has been demonstrated in ontogenetic studies of in vitro synthesis of immunoglobulins by avian lymphoid tissues (Thorbecke and Warner, personal communication). This developmental pattern of immunoglobulin synthesis is also reflected in the ontogeny of circulating immunoglobulin levels [3].
