Resumo

The changes in serum LH and FSH (luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone) in immature rats treated with an optimal dose fo estradiol benzoate (EB) were measured by antibody radioimmunoassay. Ovulation occurred 72 hours after EB injection in 87% of the rats and ovarian weights were significantly increased (p<.05) at 48 hours. LH levels rose to a peak 15 nanograms/ml) at 56 hours. Serum FSH drastically increased at 2 hours (4 nanograms/ml) dropped at 24 hours (about 1 nanogram/ml) and rose to a second peak at 56 hours (15-19 nanograms/ml). FSH and LH values were significantly higher (p<.01) at 65 hours after EB injection than at 72 hours after injection. Uterine weight was also significantly increased at 56 hours (180 mg). A surge of gonadotropins including LH and FSH concurrent with physiologic changes in the reproductive tract occurs prior to ovulation in the immature rats pretreated with an optimal dose of EB.
