A massa d’agua da plataforma continental do Maranhao foi identificada a partir de dados de temperatura e salinidade da coluna d´agua. Estes parâmetros foram medidos em 25 estacoes oceanograficas, distribuidas ao longo de 6 perfis perpendiculares ao litoral ocidental do Maranhao e Golfao Maranhense. As campanhas oceanograficas foram realizadas em novembro de 1997 (descarga minima do rio Mearim) a bordo do navio oceanografico Antares (Marinha do Brasil), durante a Operacao Norte II do Programa REVIZEE. O trabalho enfocou: (1) a distribuicao horizontal e vertical da temperatura e salinidade da agua; (2) a identificacao e caracterizacao da massa de agua ocorrente na plataforma continental do Maranhao. A aquisicao dos dados de temperatura e salinidade foi feita atraves do CTD. Os resultados mostram que a temperatura e a salinidade variam muito pouco neste periodo (variacao maxima de 2,1°C e 1,07, respectivamente), demonstrando que as aguas nesta plataforma sao bem misturadas, sem presenca da termoclina e a massa d’agua predominante e a Agua Tropical. Abstract Water mass in the Maranhao continental shelf, during the dry period (November, 1997) The oceanic layer of the Maranhao Continental Shelf was identified with temperature and salinity data of the water column. These parameters had been measured in 25 oceanographical stations, distributed throughout 6 perpendicular profiles to the western coast ad Gulf of the Maranhao State. The Northern Operation II cruise of the REVIZEE Program were executed during the low river discharge (november 1997) on board the ¨Antares¨ ship (Brazilian navy). this study it focuses: (1) the horizontal and vertical distribution of the the temperature and salinity of the water; (2) the identification and characterization of the oceanic layers of the Maranhao continental shelf. The acquisition of the data of temperature and salinity was made through the CTD. The results show that the temperature and the salinity vary very little in this period (maximum variation of 2,1°C and 1,07, respectively), demonstrating that the waters in this shelf are well-mixed, without presence of the termoclina and the predominant mass d’agua is the Tropical Water.
