Resumo

This paper aims to discuss conceptions of childhood and education in Serrolândia, an inland community in the state of Bahia (Brazil), from 1940 to 1970. Since the concept of childhood is historically constructed, the relationships between the views of childhood and education are first put into historical perspective. An analysis of the formal education system in Serrolândia is then carried out through the speeches and practices reflecting the mental attitudes concerning the child. Former students and teachers in the local school system during the time span under study were interviewed, and school enrollment and attendance documents were examined. The school system was found to be one of the main institutions designed to child training in the community and three school types were identified: the rural private school, the parochial school and the public (government-owned) school. Despite their different organizational structures, all of them were shown to shape the children's behavior with varying methods, such as repression by means of physical punishment, religion and modem discipline.
