Grand multiparas; a ten-year study.

Resumo563 grand multiparas (having given birth to 6 viable infants) who were delivered at Catholic Maternity Institute between 1944 and 1953 were surveyed to determine the incidence of complications. 84.9% of these women had labors and deliveries with all stages essentially normal. 93.4% of the women were delivered by nurse-midwives in the home while 6.6% were delivered by obstetricians. The incidence of breech presentation was 3.5% and of other malpresentations 1.9%. Abruptio placentae occurred in 2.1% of the cases placenta previa in 1.0% pathologic blood loss in 8.3% and retained or adherant placentae in 1.6%. Twins occurred with an incidence of .89% and stillbirths with an incidence of 1.9%. 2.1% of the women had caesarian sections. The incidence of premature births was 8.8% and 40% of these births were of mothers who had 8 or more children. 56.3% of the mothers were in the older age group; the average age of the mothers was 35.2 years. Labors varied from 35 minutes to 37 hours and 20 minutes. The incidence of hypertension renal disease and associated conditions was lower in this study than in others.
