ResumoDiabolus in musica : in dialogue with Thomas Mann's Doktor Faustus The nature of art and the artist as well as the state of music between the two world wars are the topics selected for discussion from Thomas Mann's novel Doktor Faustus. In order to set up a dialogue within which these topics can be examined more closely they are compared to and confronted with contemporaneous writings by the philosopher Theodor W. Adorno and the composer Hugo Distler. Finally, the relevance of these ideas to art and music within a democratic and multicultural South African context is discussed. The dialogue is also pursued on another level: all three authors speak Afrikaans by means of translations prepared specifically for this article by the author.
