ResumoBackground: Cognitive impairment is common in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and its etiology is still not precisely known since there are multiple factors involved. Material and Methods: We conducted a cross sectional study including subjects over 40 years old with established diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus and with at least one year of duration, who attended the outpatient internal medicine clinic. A neuropsychological evaluation, metabolic study and an MRI brain scan was performed. results: We analyzed 51 patients with diabetes mellitus. No significant correlation was found between metabolic factors and the cognitive function in subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus. However, differences were found in the score of neuropsychological instruments in relation to the presence or absence of small vessel disease on the magnetic resonance imaging scan (p = 0.01). An association was found between the presence of dyslipidemia and small vessel disease in patients with diabetes mellitus (p=0.02). Conclusions: No correlation between metabolic factors and cognitive function in subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus was found. On the other hand, an assosciation between the presence of dyslipidemia and small vessel disease was found in diabetic patients with cognitive
